What decisions would you make for your future self?
For someone with bipolar this is a vital question. The disorder is characterised by periods of mania and depression which sometimes lead to a loss of capacity to make decisions about your care. For example, you may refuse medication which would normally keep you well. Future Selves was an exhibition on show July 2022 – February 2023 at ORTUS, Denmark Hill. There is a publication of the same name of stories and images from workshops with people who have experience of bipolar.
Future Selves was the culmination of a three-year project in dialogue with current research at King’s College London on advance directives and bipolar. Through making, I explore notions of control and care, and how we might make decisions for a future time when we are unable to look after ourselves.
